The Path We Must Cross

Pondering the Afterlife

This work was created to celebrate the visual richness of the Mexican traditions surrounding Día de los Muertos.  Created in response to an exhibition call themed around two  key symbols - marigolds and monarch butterflies, this work explores both the beauty and inevitability of death. Rich, vibrant watercolor is set off by a river of gold - a substance that evokes both  reverence and mystery. Marigolds are said to decorate the path the spirits must travel to visit the altars created by their loved ones, and monarchs, who migrate in great numbers to Mexico each year, are said to represent the returning spirits making their way home.
